AP AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The AP African American Studies course is an ELECTIVE course designed to develop an understanding of the causes, character, and consequences of the African American experience and its influence on both the world and the United States.
 
Students will appreciate African American culture's richness, diversity, and contributions to national and international life. The course will include a comprehensive review of important people, events, and ideas that have played a key role in shaping the history and culture of African Americans. 
 
College Board - AP Pilot Course Description
AP African American Studies [AP Pilot Course FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR] is an interdisciplinary course that examines The history, politics, culture, and economics of North American people of African descent.  From the slave economy to the civil rights movement, and from the blues to hip-hop, African Americans have had a huge role in shaping American society and culture. Students will examine the hardships African Americans faced during their history.
 
Furthermore, students will dive into difficult topics; such as slavery, Jim Crow laws, segregation, socioeconomic inequity, and the justice system.
 
This course will focus on people and viewpoints that have been ignored in other fields, and reveal the accomplishments and struggles that Black people faced throughout America and the world.
 
What will students experience in AP African American Studies?
The course framework established by the College Board is organized chronologically and thematically. Beginning in ancestral Africa and progressing through Afrofuturism, students will explore:
  • the origins of the African Diaspora
  • freedom, enslavement, and resistance
  • the practice of freedom
  • various movements and debates
All AP courses encourage students to examine different themes from several perspectives, in line with the field's tradition of rigorous debate.
