English Learner Program at Lakeside
Yes You Can!
Students who are learning English as a second language succeed in all areas of academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities at Lakeside High School.
How does our English Learner Program work?
According to State of California guidelines, students who are second language learners of English and who score below 4 on their initial ELPAC test receive EL program support.
- Students at levels 1 and 2 receive ELD 1/2 in place of grade-level English class (English 9, 10, 11, 12) together with an additional support period of Power Reading I/II. Students earn English credit for ELD 1/2 and elective credit for Power Reading I/II.
- Students at levels 3 and 4 receive grade-level English class together with a support period of ELD 3/4. Students earn elective credit for ELD 3/4.
- Student at levels 1-3 receive bilingual support in all core content classes.
When do students exit the EL Program?
Once students reach level 4 on the annual ELPAC test and are able to score at Basic level on the MAPs (Measurements of Academic Progress in Reading or Language) test, they are ready to exit the English Learner Program.
